Restoring Relics... Britain’s Fading Art of Piano-Making

Piano-making was at its peak in Britain in the early 1900s. More than 300 factories made pianos defined by meticulous craftsmanship.

Today, they have all but disappeared for a clutch of reasons, not least the rise of the electric guitar, and the outsourcing of piano production to China.

Fortunately, the love for the ‘real’ instrument has not faded away entirely in Britain; nor has its unique sound been replaced by the more accessible alternative, the digital keyboard.

Elishah Luke, herself a pianist, explores the slow fade of the British piano from London’s Camden Town, its historic epicentre, all the way to Yorkshire Pianos in Bolton Abbey.
