Public Space in Southwark

As a multi-disciplinary artist working predominantly with oil-based mediums, my intention for this project was to apply the level of detail afforded by painterly techniques to that of promotional illustration. I have created a mock poster series for Southwark Council, advertising the use of their public spaces. The triptych depicts a figure within two locations in Southwark Park, as well as Southwark Library. These illustrations are a component of a wider research project of mine exploring The Right to The City, a concept that seeks to understand the ways in which individuals can exercise their right to public space within a growing urban metropolis. Through this series, I hope to show how certain spaces hold the potential to provide moments of calm and removal from the fast-paced nature of inner-city life. My posters seek to reflect the stillness of solitude which might be found therein and propose the reclamation of the individual's right to public space.
