My Dad Does Karaoke
As a British Filipino, born and raised in London by first-generation parents from the Philippines, I have searched for belonging and stability in identity and community.
Having learned only English and with no instruction in Tagalog, my native language from the Philippines, I explore ways to connect with my parents’ rich culture and family in hopes of resonating with those seeking their cultural roots.
Looking back, my experience of my culture was through karaoke, a beloved hobby and a national pastime in the Philippines, and often used to celebrate and bring people together during gatherings.
My project is a personal portrait of my father, our personal connection to the Philippines, and the Philippines as a home away from home. Karaoke becomes the driving force of delving into my relationship with him and understanding his opinions and experiences. It also becomes an invitation for you to reflect on family bonds.
His charisma will be shown; also my sense of identity and community growing up in London. I share what connects us, as well as the differences between generations, reflecting on the idea of family and connections that have shaped us.
