Drawing on water as an instrument in the retelling of memory and trauma; Kamaka navigates race, birth and spiritual inheritance. Kamaka retraces the colonial history behind racialised childbirth, exploring the enduring impacts of the suppression of Caribbean spiritual practices.
This project takes its title from my Grandmother’s maiden name, the series working as an exploration of my lineage and identity. I grew up listening to stories of premonitory dreams within my family, my Grandmother often recounting her dreams of fish anytime her daughters fell pregnant. I wished to actualise these as a visual experience, drawing on childbirth as a spiritual tethering and a ritual, one poached by colonization.
