I Lost This Year
Spike Aitchison
This piece is an exploration of the idea of ascending through the frame of basketball. I've been passionate about the National Basketball Association (NBA) since I was young and I've always been fascinated by how it acts as a vehicle for culture and representation. I like to acknowledge ascension as not only a way of reaching new heights, but leaping towards all those we have lost along the way. Of reaching for them, outstretched, in the moment you need them to carry you higher and further. This piece was drenched in politics, subjectivity and power – the main inspiration centres around Allen Iverson, the controversial NBA superstar and most valuable player or MVP, who was had the nation's seeing eye on him whatever he did, good or bad. "Find the point where you are un-killable, and jump towards it if you can."
