That's Not the Point

That’s Not the Point is a personal project shaped by my observations of how online spaces, particularly social media, have become increasingly divided along political lines. I became interested in how ideas like patriotism and nationalism are often conflated and actions such as the hanging of England flags can carry deeper meanings. In the film, this tension plays out within a friendship group. When two members of the group display flags, it causes discomfort for their British Asian friend. While the gesture may seem harmless to some, it can signal exclusion or hostility to others, especially in a climate of highly charged debates around immigration and belonging. I wanted to explore the inherent contradictions in maintaining close friendships with people from immigrant backgrounds while engaging in behaviours that could suggest a broader rejection of those very communities.
