That's Not The Point

That’s Not the Point is a personal project shaped by my observations of how online spaces, particularly social media, have become increasingly divided along political lines. I became interested in how ideas like patriotism and nationalism are often conflated, and how actions, such as hanging England flags, can carry deeper meanings. In the film, this tension plays out within a friendship group when two members display flags, creating discomfort for their British Asian friend. While the gesture may seem harmless to some, it can signal exclusion or hostility to others, especially in a climate where debates around immigration and belonging are highly charged. I wanted to explore the contradiction of maintaining close friendships with people from immigrant backgrounds, while engaging in behaviours that can suggest a broader rejection of those very communities, and how this tension strains relationships.
