“I feel like I’m the most gorgeous gremlin ever”: Women in metal aren’t the problem, misogyny is
@helloiamlewis
A candid snapshot of the life of women who approach the historically male-dominated genre of heavy metal music in novel and boundary- breaking ways. A focal point in this piece is the embrace of ‘hyper-femininity’ within this musical genre and how it challenges our expectations of what it means to be ‘metal’, politically and aesthetically. The piece also questions the systemic issues within the metal music scene: do misogynistic attitudes still prevail and what does this mean for the musicians, fans and journalists redefining the genre? I also asked 144 anonymous female participants in a global survey if misogyny still exists within the structure of the metal music scene. Their answers may surprise you.

Lani, 23, is a skilled sculptor, mask maker and prop/costume designer who grew up on the gritty, creatively innovative, smog-ridden landscape of south London. He is also the love of my life. Since being introduced to Slipknot at the age of 12, Lani has been crafting custom masks and surpassing industry expectations beyond creative comprehension. He has worked with the likes of Sleep Token, Static Dress and Whitechapel as well as Gladiator 2 (2024) and Wicked: For Good (2025). This photo essay takes place at his south Norwood workplace, where, when dusk falls, innovation rises. He is adding the final touches to a custom Yoda sculpt, which will then go on to moulding and being cast into a wearable mask. This is a wonky love letter to my ingenious Lani, a most talented man with a brilliant mind.
